RAD DAD DIY: Easy Father’s Day DIY T-Shirt

The most charming Father’s Day gifts are always the one of a kind gifts – and usually the ones made by kids who still have a sense of wonder (and naïveté) in their artwork. So why not capture all that in one simple RAD DAD DIY T Shirt?

This custom t-shirt for DAD is so easy that even the kids can make it. In fact, it is designed to be made by kids. Overthink it and it won’t look quite as cool. Here’s what you need:

Supplies for DIY T-Shirt:

Directions for DIY T-Shirt:

Pre-wash your tee. This will remove any starches that may have been used in the finish process and will help the fabric absorb the paint better. Allow to full dry. Iron if needed.

Slide a scrap pieces of paper between your two fabric layers. This will prevent any paint from leaking through to the backside of the t-shirt.

Lay out your text on the front of the tee using painters tape. This shouldn’t be fancy… you want it to look rustic and quickly done (that’s what makes it RAD). Pick any dad slogan you like. Ensure all edges of the tape are pushed down and sticking well to the fabric to prevent any paint leakage.

Now it’s time to paint. Using any colours you like, start to paint the t-shirt. You can use paint brushes or sponges or even your fingers. You just want to ensure that you cover the entire area to create clean and crisp outlines when you peel off the taped letters.

When the design/painting is done, carefully peel off the letters. Do it now, waiting until the paint dries will make peeling the tape more difficult.

Allow to dry for 24 hours.

Wash separately in the wash on cold the first time around. Dry in a hot dryer – this will set the colour.

Christian has been a cultural and style junkie since the age of 6; while most kids were swiping cookies, he was swiping his grandfathers' Patek Philippe. Raised to appreciate art, fashion, design and  literature (yeah, this one actually reads) by a single mother fondly called Jackie-O. Christian quickly went from childhood cultural capital thief to academia protégé. Referred to as the cat's meow by some, too clever by half by others, Christian eschewed the academic life and ran away to join the circus -the fashion circus. Several well-appointed positions later and a career on the rise would be most people's dream but it was time to say fuck off and start all over again.

This is Christian Dare Unedited.
