Goodbye Cheese Board, Hello S’Mores Board

There’s just something about winter that makes me think about S’Mores… perhaps it’s the idea of sitting around a warm campfire après-ski roasting marshmallows and staying toasty warm? Or perhaps it’s just all that chocolate and marshmallow goodness? Either way, I have re-discovered my love of S’Mores this holiday season by making them indoors.

What? Yes, I said it. You don’t have to go outdoors and build a campfire to enjoy that toasty-marshmallow-melted-chocolate-goodness thanks to some new tricks that I have up my sleeve. First, you can pick yourself up an indoor/outdoor table top fire bowl.

I picked up mine at Luxury Fire Canada. These chic fire bowls can work indoors or outdoors and run on clean burning gel fuel (scent free). They are the perfect centrepiece to your S’Mores Board so that you can roast some marshmallows as you sit around the table.

Trick number two: make a S’Mores Dip.

Making a S’Mores dip is as easy as one-two-three. First, grab a cast iron pan. Any size will do…I used a 6.5″ inch cast iron pan. It is the perfect size for a group of 3 or 4 people. Just remember, the bigger the pan, the more dip you will have to make or eat.

Tip: You can choose any type of chocolate you like in chips or chunks form

In your cast iron pan, add in one cup of chocolate chips or chunks. I opted for milk chocolate but you can use any type of chocolate you like: dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate. You could even opt for a mix of different chocolates.

Tip: If you run low on marshmallows, you can cut them into halves before you stack ’em

Now layer your marshmallows over your chocolate chips in your pan. You can use any type of marshmallows – giant ones, small ones, vegan artisanal ones…it all works.

Once you have all your marshmallows lined up nicely, it’s time to pop it in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes. You want your marshmallow tops to have a nice golden brown hue (this usually means all your chocolate is melted as well).

If the chocolate begins to cool before you eat it all, you can re-heat

Pull it out of the oven and set it on a heat safe trivet on your s’mores board. Just make to dig in and enjoy before it cools too much (and the chocolate gets hard).

For my S’Mores Board, I got creative with options. Sure you could opt for traditional s’mores with graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallows. But why not make it more fun and creative. Add a variety of chocolate – white, milk, dark, cookies and cream…peppermint chocolate. It’s all about what you like.

For crackers I went a little crazy. Sure, I included classic graham crackers but also added in some chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, Oreos, mint Oreos… And then I added in some salty options; I love sweet and salty combinations. I would go for some classic salted ruffle chips (the ruffle holds up better for dipping than a flat chip) and some pretzels.

And finally added in some extra garnishes to top your S’mores – like fresh strawberries or raspberries. Or even cherries. Or even bacon? That’s right, I cooked up some small pieces of bacon (pre-cut them into 2″ pieces and baked them in the oven) to top my s’mores.

You can even add in peanut butter cups or chocolate with nuts

  • 2 cups marshmallows (you need enough to cover the top)

Christian has been a cultural and style junkie since the age of 6; while most kids were swiping cookies, he was swiping his grandfathers' Patek Philippe. Raised to appreciate art, fashion, design and  literature (yeah, this one actually reads) by a single mother fondly called Jackie-O. Christian quickly went from childhood cultural capital thief to academia protégé. Referred to as the cat's meow by some, too clever by half by others, Christian eschewed the academic life and ran away to join the circus -the fashion circus. Several well-appointed positions later and a career on the rise would be most people's dream but it was time to say fuck off and start all over again.
