One of the biggest trends that has dominated interior design over the past few years has been HYGGE.
But what is Hygge?Simply put, Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. It’s how Scandinavian minimalism gets warmed up. You can check out the video below that I made for LG Canada on some great tips on how to incorporate Hygge into your home.
So how do you add a little Hygge into your home?
- Stick to a neutral color scheme. The color scheme for your home decor should never be too overwhelming when it comes to hygge.
- Create a comfortable atmosphere while using natural materials and fibers. The Scandinavians believe in only using natural fibres, so opt for organic cottons and washed linens. Mix in some great wood pieces as well.
- Warm it up with a variety of soft lighting options including candles. This can be anything from pillar candles to taper candles. Also consider adding in some scented candles to add to the mood in your space.
- Make a fire for instant Hygge at Home. And don’t worry, if you don’t have a fireplace you can fake it. Do like I did in the video and create a faux fireplace with a reclaimed vintage mantel, some mirrored tiles and some pillar candles. Instant atmosphere.
- Update your throw pillows with a texture to add interest to a neutral colour scheme. Consider mixing different fabrics, from soft luxe velvets to chunky knits, and even washed linens. It will be feel fresh yet cozy.
- Add in knits wherever you can. This can mean anything from a classic cable knit throw to your sofa or reading chair to an oversized chunky knit blanket on your bed.
- Bring the outdoors in – opt for a living Christmas tree this year that you can keep in your space all winter (and plant outside come spring).
