I am sure by now everyone knows that we now call the 11th month of the year Movember aka moustache season. But do you all know why?
Movember is an annual event, that first started in Australia in 2004, involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. By encouraging men (whom the charity refers to as “Mo Bros”) to get involved, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Okay, okay. Got it now? Well did you also know that men on average die 6 years earlier than women. And that it is preventable. Movember is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. The foundations are completely independent of government funding, so they can challenge the status quo and invest quicker in what works. In just 13 years they funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world. And gone from 30 moustaches to over 5 million. So how can you help?
