I recently discovered a new shoe company based right here in Toronto – Philip Mercer. Now you can imagine that I am constantly introduced to new shoes; people seem to know about my footwear addiction and they like to add fuel to the fire. I have encountered many new brands but I don’t write about most of them because something always seems slightly wrong – wrong leather, weird toe, weird colours. Philip Mercer gets is right from the start.
The brand was founded by two former coworkers who became business partners because they both felt there was a gap in the menswear shoe industry that needed to be filled. Good shoes were very hard to find and when you did, they were often very expensive. They set about making great shoes for under $250 – almost unheard of in the men’s shoe game. The current collection features 5 styles, including a cap toe, a brogue, a monk strap and a loafer. The shoes are all designed in Canada and made in Portugal by a master craftsmen with over 80 years of shoe-making experience for brands like Prada and Louis Vuitton. They are made of full-grain Italian calfskin leather. And they fit like a glove. Perfection.
