The Drifter
676 N. Orleans St.
This may be one of the more authentic attempts at a modern day speak easy. The tiny subterranean space is beneath the Green Door Tavern (which has a very cool door guy btw) and is only accessible through a door hidden in a bookcase – you need to know the password to get it. And I am sorry I can’t tell you how we got in but it was pretty worth it – for the most part. The space itself was once an actual speakeasy and they have recreated that feeling but with a carny twist. They have burlesque and musical performances and a rotating cocktail menu dealt out on tarot cards. Cocktails were good, atmopshere was good. Service was pretty mediocre until I mentioned I write for multiple publications. Then they got friendly.

Stout Barrel House & Galley
642 N. Clark St.
I would not suggest hitting this bar on a Friday or Saturday night – it is a typical sports bar and easily becomes douchebag central. But I did happen to end up here with my partner in crime on a Sunday evening to watch the hockey game. That’s right, we watch hockey. This is a sports bar and normally I would leave these off the list but it wasn’t half bad. They have a decent selection of beers on tap and a full gastro pub menu. So if you need to find a spot to watch a game and have some beer. Pick here and order the Animal Fries – you can thank me later. stoutchicago.com
