Last night the CFDA awards were handed out and although Rihanna stole the red carpet in her Adam Selman custom dress. The real winner was menswear with the acknowledgements of three young and talented menswear designers. Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School NYC won Menswear Designer of the Year and Tim Coppens won the Swarovski Award for Menswear. Oh yeah, and Tom Ford won the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award.
Public School NYC has quickly established itself as the home of the cutting edge menswear with a luxe streetwear vibe. Public School NYC is the antidote to the J.Crew preppy plaids of the world. I love their signature drop crotch pants and styling. They even beat out Thom Browne for this award – definitely boys to watch.
Tim Coppens graduated from the internationally acclaimed Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1998 (this is the same school known for training Dries Van Noten and Kris Van Assche). He has worked with various luxury and sports-performance brands before founding his own label which has already garnered critical acclaim. I told you about this kid before, maybe now everyone will pay more attention to his brand.
