In defense of a HAT

Here’s the story: Pharrell Williams wore a hat to the Grammy Awards. Most of you hated it; I loved it. See said hat below.

Post Grammy show fashion commentators soon picked up on the fact that said hat was from a 1982 Vivienne Westwood Collection, all of a sudden everyone loved the hat. Two fashion geniuses, Westwood and Williams, must be on to something.

The Buffalo hat, with its high elevations, was first shown in Westwood’s Autumn/Winter 1982 Nostalgia of Mud Collection. Also known as the Buffalo Collection it incorporated primitivist and Rastafarian elements with Peruvian elements. The Mountain or Buffalo Hat, as it is also referred to as, sits 8 inches tall with a 2.5 inch brim. Available in camel, black, navy, green, bordeaux, red and fuchsia pink felt and a woven straw version for the summer. Retail $180. Available in March, I am sure this will sell out quickly.

If you want to see where Williams is headed next fashion wise – perhaps it’s best you get familiar with the Westwood archive. Vivienne was always ahead of her time.

Christian has been a cultural and style junkie since the age of 6; while most kids were swiping cookies, he was swiping his grandfathers' Patek Philippe. Raised to appreciate art, fashion, design and  literature (yeah, this one actually reads) by a single mother fondly called Jackie-O. Christian quickly went from childhood cultural capital thief to academia protégé. Referred to as the cat's meow by some, too clever by half by others, Christian eschewed the academic life and ran away to join the circus -the fashion circus. Several well-appointed positions later and a career on the rise would be most people's dream but it was time to say fuck off and start all over again.

This is Christian Dare Unedited.
