Wine Wednesday: Wolf Blass Gold Label Syrah

I have always opted for reds over whites when picking my wines, so it should come as no surprise that I review more red wines than whites. Today will be no exception – although this is one exceptional red.

This Gold Label Syrah from Wolf Blass is made up of a blend of 97%  Syrah and 3% Viognier in the blend, which is traditional in the Rhone Valley for this type of wine. The splash of Viognier adds mid-palate depth where cool-climate Syrah can be lean. The elevation of our Adelaide Hills vineyards offers mild summer days with cool nights, providing ideal conditions for producing bright, spicy Syrah with an incredibly velvety mouth-feel.

In the Glass: a beautiful and vibrant crimson with purple hues – it’s like liquid satin.

On the Nose: An intensely fragrant wine showing lifted fragrant red berry fruits with notes of spice and subtle nutty complexity with pronounced aromas of black cherry, cassis, sweet oak, mocha and black pepper. A touch of Viognier adds an ethereal lift without dominating, enhancing the nose with exotic ginger and floral aromatics.

On the Tongue: Fleshy, dark berry fruits and warm spice fill the palate supported by subtle oak influence. The palate is dry with abundant fine-grained and ripe tannins, medium body and lively acidity. Spice and smokey notes linger on the finish.

Verdict: Love it. Buy multiple bottles. Pairs well with rack of lamb (obviously) or on its own (which I prefer).

Christian has been a cultural and style junkie since the age of 6; while most kids were swiping cookies, he was swiping his grandfathers' Patek Philippe. Raised to appreciate art, fashion, design and  literature (yeah, this one actually reads) by a single mother fondly called Jackie-O. Christian quickly went from childhood cultural capital thief to academia protégé. Referred to as the cat's meow by some, too clever by half by others, Christian eschewed the academic life and ran away to join the circus -the fashion circus. Several well-appointed positions later and a career on the rise would be most people's dream but it was time to say fuck off and start all over again.

This is Christian Dare Unedited.
