Long Live McQueen

It has been four years since the passing of Alexander McQueen but you can still feel his presence through his influence on the runways and in the streets to this day. Much praise was often hoisted upon his womenswear collection – in fact, it is where much of his genius shone best. But his influence on menswear must be remembered. Here are my favourite menswear collections from Lee McQueen.

5. AW 2010 His final menswear collection. This is all Lee. Pattern on pattern. Beautiful

4. AW 2009 British bad ass from the Dickens era. Few menswear designers pull off dark glam better.

3. AW 2008. Lee was a big fan of Vivienne Westwood – and you can see her influence in this collection. McQueen even once referred to Westwood as the Coco Chanel of our Day. Vivienne, on the other hand, said “his only usefulness is as a measure of zero talent”.

2. SS 2005 “It is a political statement as well as a sartorial one – a mixture of two cultures that are separate but, here, can be mixed harmoniously”

1. SS 2010 My all time favourite McQueen menswear collection was from Spring Summer 2010 – where Lee chose to do a presentation and not a runway show. It was perfection, it showed the subtle details and finishes to this collection. He was a master of pattern on pattern and the perfectly tailored yet slightly undone. This collection just might be his most ‘Margiela.’

Christian has been a cultural and style junkie since the age of 6; while most kids were swiping cookies, he was swiping his grandfathers' Patek Philippe. Raised to appreciate art, fashion, design and  literature (yeah, this one actually reads) by a single mother fondly called Jackie-O. Christian quickly went from childhood cultural capital thief to academia protégé. Referred to as the cat's meow by some, too clever by half by others, Christian eschewed the academic life and ran away to join the circus -the fashion circus. Several well-appointed positions later and a career on the rise would be most people's dream but it was time to say fuck off and start all over again.

This is Christian Dare Unedited.
