Nothing to Sweep Under These Rugs

I have to admit that I have a love/hate relationship with rugs. Or rather a situational relationship with rugs. Our home in Toronto is very minimalist (in fact, I keep editing more and more out of it as I type this) and has all bare wood floors. I have tried rugs to ‘warm’ up the space as designer prescribe. But I hate it – they get returned or tossed. I just love the bare floor. It works.

Now in our New Orleans home I am the complete opposite – I keep adding in rugs. At first I was sad to cover up the historic floors we had refinished but now I find myself seeking new rugs for rooms that are still bare. And not just any rug will do. I want colour. I want print. I want beautifully made carpets – antique or newly made that will stand the test of time.

And the hunt continues…

I am in love with the Chiaroscuro carpet by Alexander McQueen for The Rug Company. I think the black and floral could be the perfect dark majestic anchor in the front hall.

The Climbing Tiger by DVF for The Rug Company has to live in my living room filled with palm and tropical print fabrics. It will add to the print-on-print feeling.

Feeling the pink from Vivienne Westwood for The Rug Company. It’s an abstract nod to the Scottish thistle. It’s organic yet modern.

Classic Greek Key Pattern is updated in this Key Shadow. The perfect shade of green. I love it.

Christian has been a cultural and style junkie since the age of 6; while most kids were swiping cookies, he was swiping his grandfathers' Patek Philippe. Raised to appreciate art, fashion, design and  literature (yeah, this one actually reads) by a single mother fondly called Jackie-O. Christian quickly went from childhood cultural capital thief to academia protégé. Referred to as the cat's meow by some, too clever by half by others, Christian eschewed the academic life and ran away to join the circus -the fashion circus. Several well-appointed positions later and a career on the rise would be most people's dream but it was time to say fuck off and start all over again.

This is Christian Dare Unedited.
